A meaningless name change meant to signal virtue
Either cancel Good Friday or don't. But do not gaslight the citizens of Monroe County with dishonesty and hypocrisy.
As recently as 2020, Monroe County government included Good Friday by name in the list of officially recognized county holidays. In 2023, that changed, as the Monroe County Commissioners changed Good Friday to "Spring Holiday." That holiday just so happens to fall on Good Friday every year. County government was a few years behind city government, which had renamed Good Friday back in 2016.
Look, if county government does not want to recognize Good Friday because of non-Christians who work for the county or because of non-Christian citizens, that is one thing. It harms no one for county employees to have a day off in March or April, but actually removing it from the holiday schedule is a decision that can be justified whether I personally agree with it or not.
But if county government wants to cancel Good Friday, then actually cancel the holiday and have county government be open. But to continue to have county government be closed on Good Friday every single year but pretend they are not actually closing for Good Friday is hypocrisy and dishonesty. There is absolutely no difference between 2020 and later years, other than the fantasy that county government is not closing for Good Friday so the commissioners can virtue signal about being "inclusive" of all faiths or no faith at all.
I have less of a problem with "canceling" the holiday than gaslighting citizens of Monroe County or county employees. Neither city government nor county government have the courage of their convictions, which would lead them to actually keep local offices open on Good Friday instead of renaming it, proclaiming your "virtue" and changing nothing of substance.
