About those South African refugees...
It should not be controversial to grant mercy to people fleeing persecution and violence.
President Trump stirred outrage on the Left when he decided to take in white refugees from South Africa. He is buying into a conspiracy theory by white supremacists, and there is no genocide happening in South Africa, according to the legacy media. But perhaps instead of getting wrapped around the "white genocide" claims, we should examine the purpose of our asylum policy.
For the sake of argument, let's concede the legacy media's claim that the murders of whites in South Africa do not constitute "genocide." OK, fine, that is not a genocide. That does not negate legitimate asylum claims. President Trump showed footage of a political rally where a prominent politician was leading thousands of people in chanting "kill the Boer!" There is no question that whites (especially white farmers) have been subjected to violence - including murder and rape - simply because of their race.
The entire purpose of granting asylum is to protect people who are at risk of persecution, violence or death in their home country. Given the climate of violence and racial hatred in South Africa, white farmers absolutely have a legitimate claim to be fleeing persecution. Therefore, this is an appropriate move by Trump and is in line with long-standing American foreign policy.
Note: I am not taking the position that there is no genocide happening in South Africa. I am not taking the position that there is a genocide, either. I am hypothetically conceding the point made by President Trump's critics for the sake of argument. Even if there is no genocide, Trump's policy is still a good one based on facts that the legacy media has conceded.
You could take issue with Trump's refugee policy on other areas, oppose limiting other asylum claims, or argue that it should be extended to more people. All of those are legitimate things to address. But none of that means that the United States should refuse to grant asylum to people who are being persecuted, raped and murdered based purely on their skin pigmentation. "America First" does not mean we cannot be merciful to refugees fleeing persecution.
