All American citizens get the benefits of citizenship
The moral depravity of the Tate brothers does not negate their rights as Americans, nor does it negate the duties of the American government.
Let me be very clear: Andrew Tate is a very wicked man, as is his brother Tristan. They operated a porn website that exploited women and tried to financially drain desperate men. There are many reasons to disdain the Tate brothers and condemn their words and behavior, but it is not automatically a bad thing if President Trump directed his administration to negotiate with Romania about their case. There were serious concerns about the way the Romanian government handled the case.
Whatever you think of the Tate brothers, they are both natural-born American citizens. As such, the American government has a responsibility to intervene and protect American citizens abroad and ensure their rights are protected. What we do not want is the government picking and choosing which American citizens "deserve" protection abroad, based on the morality of those citizens. That is a very dangerous road to travel, and sets a dangerous precedent.
If you were treated badly by a foreign government, you would not want the United States government to decide not to protect you because of some bad thing you did. You would want the full force of the United States protecting you, as is the case with everyone else.
This is also why Ron DeSantis was dead wrong in saying the Tate brothers are "not welcome" in Florida. They are American citizens and they are welcome on American soil, period. You do not get to pick and choose which American citizens are welcome in any of the fifty states. That is what equal protection is about. With his anti-Constitutional virtue signaling, DeSantis has done great harm to his 2028 campaign for President of these United States. The most important responsibility of elected officials is to protect the rights of American citizens. DeSantis failed in that duty.
If the Tate brothers committed crimes, they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, and the United States government should not try to protect them from the consequences of their actions if they are convicted by a jury of their peers after a fair trial. But the United States government should also protect U.S. citizens abroad and make sure they are granted due process and that their other rights are protected.
As is often the case, two things can be true at once:
Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate are wicked men and total moral degenerates.
They are also a natural-born American citizens who deserve the same protections from the American government as everyone else.
We should not allow our moral condemnation of the Tate brothers' lifestyle to compromise our commitment to our Constitution and the responsibility of the federal government to protect American citizens abroad.
