Being "authentic" should not be the goal
Conservatives arguing policy and principle should not sound like an Eddie Murphy stand-up routine in 1987.
It is easy to tell who should not be taken seriously on social media. They are the ones who fill their posts and replies with obscenities. F this, F that, F you, F the other thing.
There was a time when conservatives looked down on people who could not control their emotions in public discourse and peppered their arguments with obscene language. When people drive by the abortion mill and scream obscenities at the people picketing, it was seen as evidence of lack of maturity. To some extent, that is still true. Social media is filled with clips of Leftists screeching at things, so the audience can laugh in derision.
But over the last ten years, the right (especially the "new right" or the "alt right") has become increasingly comfortable with obscene language to make an "argument." Some on the alt right or the "new right" would say those who disapprove of obscenities are "not angry enough about anything" because they are "weak." Accusations of homosexuality often accompany these "arguments."
But the man who cannot control himself and curses like a sailor in the public square is not the "strong" one. He is weak. He is distracting from his own argument - and maybe something that ought to stir a righteous anger in people - when he is using the F word like an Eddie Murphy stand-up routine in 1987.
Proverbs 25:28 tells us that a man "that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls." God tells us through His apostle in II Timothy 1:7 and Galatians 5:22–24 that self-control is a gift of the spirit. This does not mean we should not be angry. It means we must control our anger. Jesus Christ was certainly angry, but He was fully in control of Himself when He made a whip and violently drive the money changers out of His temple. He even quoted Scripture when driving them out.
If you cannot make an argument without dropping the F bomb, your argument is very weak. It can be good to be angry, and Scripture tells us on many occasions where God is angry. But God's anger is always holy and under control. We should aspire to that: Always tell the truth, but always be in control.
