Donald Trump's stand on abortion is morally reprehensible
It is absurd for Donald Trump to claim that there will be "peace" on the abortion issue because he negotiated a "deal." There will never be "peace" as long as babies are being murdered.
Donald Trump is not and has never been a conservative, especially on social issues. But if he is nothing else, Trump is a transactional politician. He knew he had to campaign and then govern as a conservative (which he did, mostly) in order to keep the Republican base with him. He thinks the base will stay with him now regardless of policy, because of his personality. Maybe he is right, but that does not make his pivot on abortion any less politically unwise.
When Trump was asked about banning abortion at 5 weeks, he said it would be "terrible" and a "mistake." It is one thing to say the nation is not ready for an early-stage ban and that we need to move public opinion until we can get a durable ban that will not be overturned in the next election. It is another thing entirely to oppose a ban on its merits and attack and name-call one of your opponents in the primary for supporting a policy that most of the party's base supports.
Trump's position is morally and intellectually incoherent. If one believes that abortion is the termination of an innocent human life, the goal should be to make all abortion illegal - from the gruesome practice of "partial birth abortion" to chemical abortions that kill a new human life just days after he or she is created in the image of God. Trump did the pro-life movement a great service in nominating justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, only to undercut state level efforts to save lives made possible by the 2022 ruling.
Demonstrating his enormous ego, Trump said that he will sit down with both sides and negotiate a "deal" on abortion restrictions so that there will be "peace" on the abortion issue for the first time in fifty years. Trump apparently forgot just how much Leftists hated him while he was in office, and how much they hate him even now. It is absurd to stipulate that there will be "peace" on this issue, or that pro-life people would be happy with a 15 week ban that would leave the vast majority of surgical abortions untouched.
Pro-life Americans will always be thankful to Trump for the demise of Roe, but we should never be fooled into thinking that Trump actually is one of us. He is not. Christian conservatives and pro-life Republicans should not vote for Trump in the 2024 Republican primaries. We should instead someone who will finish the fight to protect the unborn, not run for cover because enemy fire is getting more intense. Trump's morally abominable statement on abortion proves that the mantra of "at least he fights" was always a fraud.
