Fear and love are not mutually exclusive
All Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus' ministry did not nullify the Old Testament.
We hear a lot about how we should love God, but what about fearing God? Should we fear God? Yes! See the following verses from Scripture:
♣ - Proverbs 1:7
♣ - Proverbs 8:13
♣ - Ecclesiastes 12:13
♣ - Proverbs 14:27
♣ - Psalms 111:10
♣ - Psalms 34:9
"But Scott, that was the Old Testament. We do not fear God any more." Yes, those verses are in the Old Testament. But 2 Timothy 3:16-17 informs us of the eternal value of Scripture. Do not forget that the early church did not have the New Testament. They had the Old Testament. Jesus was a Jew, and all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus' ministry did not nullify the Old Testament.
Jesus also tells us to fear God in Matthew 10:28. Jesus' apostles continue that command:
♣ - 1 Peter 2:17
♣ - Philippians 2:12
♣ - 2 Corinthians 7:1
Some would argue that fear and love are mutually exclusive. That is not true. We can see God as our loving adoptive Father, and love Him for sending His Son to die on the cross for our sins, while also fearing His wrath. Remember, fear went through the early church when Ananias and Sapphira were struck down for lying about their love offering, but the church continued to grow and flourish.
But it is important to keep a balance. We as Christians have a bad habit of falling into ditches. In our day, we hear "love, love, love" all the time with little emphasis on obeying God or pursuing holiness. It is tempting to fall into the ditch of focusing on God's wrath and the need to fear Him in response to this theological error, forgetting God's unlimited love that saves from the uttermost to the guttermost. We can both fear God and love Him, and we should do both.
