Here's an idea: Be the bigger person!
I understand that President Donald Trump is a rude and obnoxious person. I understand that Trump often goes too far with his attacks on political opponents. That does not justify taunting White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders about her weight, including memes calling her "Miss Piggy."
"She is the spokesperson for a detestable person!"
There are a lot of people who work in the Executive Branch, including many good people. This is always the case, no matter what you think of the person occupying the office of President. Your disdain for the President does not justify nasty personal attacks. And what does Sanders' body mass index have to do with her job performance or her administration's policies? Absolutely nothing.
"Donald Trump mocked reporter with disability! If you voted for Trump you support that!"
Nope. That is an oversimplification how people voted. Elections are much more complicated than one incident and there are many factors that determine how people vote. This has been explained many times in many different places, so there is simply no excuse to continue repeating this meme as if it were a valid "argument." It still does not justify mocking Sarach Huckabee Sanders for her weight.
What happened to the #MeToo movement? What happened to the Left's concern over online trolling and harassment of women? What happened to political correctness? Do those principles only apply when it is convenient for Leftists do use as a cudgel against conservatives?
Let's not forget there are vulnerable little girls and teenage girls who struggle with their weight. When it is acceptable to openly ridicule public figures for their weight, then it harms these girls. And yes, I know many on the Right do this too, and it is just as wrong.
We could go back and forth for years about how terrible the personal attacks are from the Right and Left. But does it really matter? Either we have moral standards for how we treat people or we do not. Yes, plenty of people on both sides are detestable two-faced hypocrites. But if we spend all of our time pointing out hypocrisy and never advocating for civility, we will never improve the political climate.
Grow up. Be the bigger person. Argue policy, not appearance. This is not difficult.
