I should be allowed to drive drunk whenever I want
There is no contradiction, and can be no contradiction, between Jesus Christ and His Word.
I am very much in favor of abolishing speed limits and drunk driving laws. If I want to drive as fast as I want, who are you to tell me I have to go 30 miles per hour instead of 90? I have places to be! Furthermore, if I want to get plastered and then get behind the wheel, who are you to tell me I cannot do that? It is just so inconvenient to find a designated driver. Calling a taxi or a "ride share" service can be expensive. I mean, yeah, the Bible does say drunkenness is wrong, but who cares? Is your desire to micromanage my life Christlike?
If you do not get it, the above is sarcasm. But that paragraph was my initial reaction when I saw this quote recently on social media:
As important as it is, the Bible is not our Lord and Savior - Jesus is. The standard by which we measure our actions is not "Is it Biblical?" but "Is it Christlike?"
We should indeed desire to be Christlike. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthian church to imitate him as he imitates Christ. And we should not be using the Bible as a way to proclaim our own righteousness and superiority over others. That is contrary to the "love your neighbor" command that is all through Scripture, and causes us to miss our own need for the blood of Jesus to atone for our sins. Scripture teaches us that we carry an insurmountable debt and can never be righteous from our own merit.
Also remember that I Corinthians 13 tells us that no matter what we do or how much theology we know, if we do not have love we are like a clanging symbol. Love - first for our Father in Heaven and then for our family, friends and community - is the foundation of Christian faith. To circle back to my opening paragraph, the reason I am not permitted to drive drunk or drive as fast as I want is not because the civil magistrate is being unreasonable or authoritarian, but because of love for me and those around me. No one wants to see people seriously injured or killed because of drunk and/or reckless driving.
But, that is my point. We know what is Christlike from His Word. We know how we should treat others because of the direct commands and principles God gives us. Remember, the Gospel of John opens by telling us that Jesus is the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God. If we set up a contradiction between being "Biblical" and "Christlike," we lose the foundation of what it means to be Christlike. At that point, we are just making stuff up - usually to suit our own interests. Christians are known as "the people of the book" for a reason.
It is impossible for the Lord Jesus Christ to be in conflict with Himself. There is no conflict between being Biblical and being Christlike. There never was and never will be. Those who claim otherwise lack spiritual understanding, or they are false prophets, or they are trying to justify their own sin. Such people should either be lovingly corrected or rebuked depending on the person and their reason for advancing this heresy.
