"Just me and Jesus" is not Biblical
The Church was established by the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake the gathering of believers.
Human beings are social creatures. We need the fellowship of other people, something God recognized in Genesis 2:18 when He said it is not good for man to be alone. God then commanded humanity to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth. This is a creation ordinance, before man was corrupted by sin.
This need for human connection applies today, especially in the Church. Far from a man-made institution, the Church was established by the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake the gathering of believers. Hebrews 13:17 tells us to obey our church authorities, as causing them grief is not profitable for us.
While I believe that temporary, limited quarantine orders in the spring of 2020 were wise, that did come with negative externalities. One of those was the loss of community. People had been listening to sermons online for many years prior to COVID-19, but that accelerated when in-person gatherings were forbidden as people generally and our civil authorities were trying to figure out exactly what was going on with this novel coronavirus. Church attendance, which had been declining for decades, was made to seem unnecessary.
It is not. We need the fellowship of other believers. The New Testament makes it clear that worship is communal, not individual. But there is another aspect to this: Not just rejection of community, but rejection of authority. If my religion is just me and Jesus, then I don’t have authority over me, admonishing and exhorting me to holiness. I can hear people saying “cult” already, and this is anathema to most Americans, but we really should put ourselves under the spiritual authority of a local church. No, this does not mean the church gets to micromanage every aspect of our lives, but we need people to admonish, encourage and even rebuke us as they see our sin. That helps us immensely.
Look at the Great Commission. Jesus tells us to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey His commandments. While this can be done (and often is done) person-to-person, it is clear that this is meant to be done through the Church. When the Apostle Paul went on his missionary journeys, he set up churches and elders in each city, so the people could continue to be instructed after he was gone. The qualifications for those leaders is laid out in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Why do we think that we know better than Jesus and His Apostles?
If you are a Christian, go to church. Join a church. Sit under the preaching of the Word from a man who knows your sins, and you know his. God wants us to help and love each other, and push each other to follow Him more closely. “Me and Jesus” sounds uniquely American, but just because it is American does not mean it is Biblical.
