No corporate welfare for Planned Parenthood
Bloomington Herald-Times, April 29, 2010
To the editor:
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Planned Parenthood is asking city government for a handout. Keep in mind that acceding to PP's most recent annual report (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/AR09_vFinal.pdf) the organization took in a total of over $1 billion while spending only $953.1 million, for a total profit of $85 million. PP is supposed to be a "not for profit" organization.
Planned Parenthood did not apply for a grant from the city last year after a scandal involving a Bloomington PP employee who tried to cover up what that employee believed to be the sexual abuse of a 13 year old girl by a 31 year old man.
PP did get a handout from the Monroe County Council last year, a sneaky and dishonest way of avoiding public scrutiny.
This time, PP wants corporate welfare to provide prescriptions, including birth control. Will this only go to married couples or will PP be subsidizing immorality? Will this include the "morning after pill?" The birth control pill can cause the destruction of a human embryo by preventing implantation.
Thanks to city council attorney Dan Sherman. He has been very helpful the last 12 years in providing information on the Hopkins fund.
