"Own The Libs" is a terrible political philosophy
Lying about fellow Christians is wicked and brings shame and dishonor on the name of Jesus Christ.
A priest was defrocked by the Anglican Catholic Church after making a "my heart goes out to you" gesture at an anti-abortion conference last month. But was it really a "Nazi" salute, as some have alleged? No, it was not. The priest explicitly said "my heart goes out to you" when he made the gesture. He said it was a joke about the reaction to Elon Musk making the same gesture.
It was unprofessional. It was childish. If he has not apologized, he should do that. But it was not a sign of devotion to Nazism. Calvin Robinson is of mixed-race heritage (he describes himself as a Black man) and would be one of the people exterminated by Nazis if they got their depraved fantasy of a pure White society. Robinson is clearly not a Nazi.
Robinson's childish antics are an illustration of a wider problem with conservatives today: Being needlessly offensive to "own the libs." Intentionally making people angry for the sake of making them angry, when the trolling contributes nothing of substance, accomplishes nothing. It is actually counterproductive to your cause. Do you know how you "own the libs?" By getting policy wins, making solid arguments in the public square, and winning elections. Not by being childish and unprofessional. Not by making people angry for the sake of making people angry. Certainly not by being nasty and crude.
At the risk of tooting my own horn, here is how you "own the libs" effectively. When I announced my candidacy for Perry Township Board in 2018, I called for more transparency in township government. In doing so, I made the incumbent township trustee very angry. I wound up losing that election (by a lot) but it did not matter: The township did implement the idea I had proposed. I did not make a stiff-arm gesture, did not insult anyone's family, and did not personally insult my political opponents. I made a case for more transparency, and that proposal was implemented.
So yes, Robinson's gesture was wrong. But for Christians to condemn it as a Nazi salute, knowing it was not, is wicked and brings shame and dishonor on the name of Jesus Christ. Let's have some grace. Robinson's trolling does deserve to be condemned, but that does not and will never excuse lying about it. We need to stop rushing to smear people based on flimsy evidence. God hates lies, and liars bring His wrath upon themselves. Repent.
