Policy matters more than signaling loyalty
Continuing to dispute the 2020 election is an argument that is worth less than nothing. What matters now is 2024.
"Trump won!"
Great. Now what are you going to DO about it?
The 2020 election was four years ago, and we are deep into the 2024 election. At a time when we should be discussing Joe Biden's record and policies, and the alternative offered by Donald Trump, some Trump fans are determined to argue on social media that the 2020 election was stolen. They will point to this, or that, and then insult people who disagree.
It is time to move on. In reality, it was time to move on in 2021, because once Congress certified the Electoral College votes and President Biden was sworn in, there was never any chance the election would be reversed and Trump would be reinstalled in office. With each passing month, that reality became more obvious. Now, with six months to go, what is the point of arguing about 2020? (Other than catering to Donald Trump's fragile ego.)
If people really think 2020 was stolen, then they need to explain what they are going to do this year to secure the ballot. Will drop boxes be banned? Will Republicans seek to eliminate ballot harvesting? In states where that practice remains legal, will Republicans also engage in ballot harvesting to reduce or even eliminate the advantage Democrats have from using that tactic? Will there be stronger Voter ID measures, more poll watchers, and improvements to chain-of-custody procedures? What reforms, strategies and policy changes will you implement to prevent what you claim happened in 2020 from happening this year?
Much of this is about signaling loyalty to Donald Trump, who remains obsessed with the election he lost. That and five dollars will get you a Biggie Bag at Wendy's. Republicans are not gaining any political advantage by arguing over the last election. What matters today is not the 2020 election, but the 2024 election.
