Thoughts on the second Trump impeachment
Here are a couple doses of reality:
First, Democrats are not going to get 17 Republicans to vote to convict Donald Trump and bar him from holding federal office. If anything, this will make Trump more determined to run in 2024 and will make the most devoted portions of his base even more dedicated to him.
Second, Trump explicitly told the crowd on January 6 to "peacefully" make their voices heard. If a private citizen had said the exact same words Trump did, a criminal court could not get a conviction. He would not even be charged.
This is not and never was a serious effort. This is all about politics, tying all Republicans to the cultists who stormed the Capitol Building. This is also about a personal vendetta, getting one last shot at Trump after he leaves office.
