Trivializing the evil of Nazi Germany
Not everyone you disagree with is a Nazi. Let's all calm down and get a sense of proportion.
Nazi Germany was a horrendously evil regime. They rounded up Jews in Germany and Nazi-occupied territory to send them to concentration camps. A combination of the camps and killing elsewhere resulted in the extermination of over six million Jews. They engaged in horrific "medical experiments" (which were actually meant as torture) in the concentration camps. But Jews were not the only victims: Nazi Germany slaughtered 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war. That alone counts as genocide. Nazis also slaughtered homosexuals, Gypsies, and the disabled.
I see Republicans and Democrats referring to each other as Nazis all the time. Did you know both Democrats and Nazis were for gun control? Did you know both Republicans and Nazis supported censorship of pornography? Republicans and Democrats have spent decades throwing comparisons to Nazi Germany at each other, especially over the last ten years. But do you know what Democrats and Republicans are not doing? They are not clearing out whole neighborhoods and sending them to concentration camps to be exterminated in gas chambers.
Yes, some of this is just memes, and some of it is intentional hyperbole to make a broader point. But when we overuse allegations that the other side are "Nazis," we risk trivializing the horrendous crimes against humanity and genocide perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its ally, Imperial Japan. (Imperial Japan, of course, was just as depraved and just as murderous as Nazi Germany.) Worse, when there are people with actual Nazi leanings who must be opposed, we risk having our arguments and evidence dismissed.
This is not to say that there are not things that can be equated to Nazi Germany. But we need to be a lot more selective in what we compare to Adolf Hitler's genocidal regime. We do not want to water down the term "Nazi" or be "the boy who cried wolf." It is also nearly impossible to convince people that your argument is correct when you have just said they are basically Nazis. There are plenty of words, arguments and comparisons that can be made without invoking Nazi Germany. Let's all work on developing a sense of proportion.
